During an informal 18-person Facebook survey, we asked respondents if they “like” their favorite coffee shop on Facebook and follow those updates. 61% responded positively, saying that they do in fact “like” their favorite java joint and one person even replied, “especially if it meant free coffee”. It’s funny how the general consumer population is used to getting a deal in exchange for their appreciation.
And chain/franchise coffee shops on Facebook aren’t the only businesses who get good advertising from being on the mega social networking site. For them, it’s easy because they probably had no trouble pulling in a few thousand followers in their first couple days of launching their page.
Independent coffee shops have to work a little bit harder – but they’re also granted much leeway in terms of creativity. Want to post photos of your newest location? Do it! Want to post a video from your poetry slam? Post it!
Below are just a few great ideas being used by independent coffee shops from Boston to Texas.
The Breukelen Coffee House: Posts Upcoming Jam Nights on Facebook
Located at 764A Franklin Ave (between St Johns Pl & Sterling Pl) in Brooklyn, NY is The Breukelen Coffee House. This is one of the many coffee shops on Facebook that use their wall to post an announcement about events that will be coming up soon at their establishment. The owners want musicians, artists, and other creative minded folks to network at their restaurant, so they make all of their upcoming events known.
A few videos from the events would be an even greater addition to the page. This gives customers something other than the menu to look forward to when they respond to the post. Nothing like a few cups of joe before a show!
Monk’s Coffee Shop: Encourages Customers to Support Abiline’s Local United Way
On 233 Cypress Street in Abilene, TX is Monks Coffee Shop and Restaurant/Cafe. This local business use’s their page to represent them as one of the many coffee shops on Facebook that remind their customers to give back to the surrounding community by giving to a local non-profit organization. On one post, they encourage their shop visitors to send a text message to donate money to support the United Way of Abilene, and in return get a free cup of coffee.

Capitol Coffee House: Posts Their Menu to Entice Tastebuds
Capitol Coffee House is located on Beacon Hill in Boston, Massachusetts. This is one of the many coffee shops on Facebook that makes is easy for their professionals and student customers to get a craving for their mouth watering selections. With the prices listed alongside posts that describe delicious daily meal choices like corn chowder, chicken & pesto, paninis with provolone, Mediterranean wraps, and combo subs, it’s not hard to tell how they’ve kept loyal customers since 1977.
Our only suggestion—perhaps posting a bit more than just specials?

Cup ‘o Joe Coffee House: Introduces New Address on Facebook
Location is everything, and coffee shops on Facebook are no different. The Cup O Joe Coffee House/Mojo Lounge family in Columbus, OH like to post when they open a new location along with several well-snapped photos of the inside and outside of the recently built establishment. The restaurant also has convenient links to a map on the same post to help customers find the building, just in case any of their future patrons aren’t familiar with the downtown area.
Additionally, they’re currently using their Facebook “homepage” to hire new baristas in a pretty fun way.
How about you? What strategies are you implementing on your own coffee shop Facebook pages?
